Water shots and waves at Froggies beach

I love shooting in the water … its so much fun.
Even on an average day of surf you can come up with some good results.
These shots are taken at a little beach close to Duranbah and Snapper Rocks.
On Monday the 11th January 2010
Its usually just a close out with heaps of backwash waves off the rocks.
Which makes it even more fun and interesting.

The Hunt for the Great White Whale – Migaloo

Migaloo the only completely white Humpback whale in existence recently made an appearance off the Gold Coast. And I was lucky enough to get a few shots of him!!
I first heard about Migaloo from Tony and Carol Hunt of Aquatic Blue Charters, a Whale Watching charter boat based in the Tweed Heads / Coolangatta area. they had actually come in contact with this amazing animal when they were working out of Port Macquarie in 2005.

Carol gets pretty excited when she sees any humpback whale. So she was ecstatic when she heard that Migaloo was spotted off Port Macquarie on Sunday the 28th June.

According to Tony and Carols calculations that meant Migaloo would be off the Gold Coast around Tuesday or Wednesday.

They were pretty much spot on because the ‘big white fella’ (aboriginal meaning for Migaloo) was spotted off Evans Head on Monday then again off Ballina late Tuesday afternoon.
I was out on the Whale watching charter with them on Tuesday morning and got some nice tail photos of several humpbacks cruising north in very glassy windless conditions.
When we heard that evening that Migaloo was off Ballina, we were a little concerned that he may have passed during the night. And we would miss him.

And sure enough there were reports the next morning that he had been spotted off Moreton Island up north.
By now I was beginning to understand how Captain Ahab felt when he was chasing the elusive ‘Moby Dick’
Wednesday morning we headed out with a full charter of about 40 people .
The weather was the complete opposite of the day before choppy, windy and crossing the Tweed Bar was a bit like a Theme Park ride!!.

We spotted a pod of whales not far off the coast, but with all the bouncing around from the northerly wind swell … it was a nightmare trying to get photos.
Then we got a call on the radio from Mal of Fingal Charters that he was following Migaloo about 10 nautical miles off the coast.
We headed out there and I managed to get a few shots.

Migaloo is truly an amazing whale to see. He is completely and totally white.

I just wish he had been a little more active .

Sneak preview of new clothing label ‘Sirens of the Sea’

‘Sirens of the Sea’ is a brand new clothing label from Pro surfer Samantha Cornish and her partner Kate.

Ive been working on surf shots with Sam a bit this year.
So when she rang me late last week and asked if I could come up to North Stradbroke to get a few shots of her new designs. I thought why not??

Sam and Kate had lined up 3 beautiful local girls Ella, Josie and Stacey for the shoot.
As well as being lookers, these girls are all hot surfers..

These tops and hoodies are just the beginning of what the girls are hoping will be a much larger range in the future.

Their website and official launch of the brand will be in the next few months.

Whale watching season is almost upon us again.

It wont be long now and there will bw plenty of Humpback Whales to see jumping and playing off the Gold coast.

This sequence is one of my best shots from last Whale watching Season in 2008.
This shot blows up exceptionally well….
You can see the rivers of water running off the whales belly .

My favourite pics from the Quiky Pro 2009 so far

Ive only been down to the Quiksilver Pro a few times while its been on and was lucky enough to go out on a boat and photograph the Trials.

Where I got some excellent shots of Ashley Smith and Corey Ziems the winners of the Trials

Theres still a few heats to go in the main event and of course the highlight of the week was Steph winning the Roxy Pro, and a close second to that was, Julian Wilson beating world champ kelly Slater on Sunday.

Cafe Le Monde and Max Judo

I got an email on Thursday afternoon, inviting me to a surf art and memorabilia charity auction that was on that night.
It was being held at Le Monde Cafe a very groovy little establishment in the base of the new ‘Kirra Surf’ building.

There may be better ways to spend a balmy summer evening but I couldnt think of one at the time so I trotted off down there as quick as I could..Turned out to be a great decision!!

The Auction was organised to raise money for the victims of the massive floods in Fiji and also the raise more funds for the Bush Fire Appeal.

A few people scored bargains in the auction , but unfortunately most items were passed over.

Bobby Blue started off the entertainment with some nice Blues and Jazz tunes…
he was accompanied on several numbers with Julian Hogdens.

The North Coast band Max Judo came on and got the place rocking.
Ive never seen these guys play before but Ive heard a lot about them.

I was honestly blown away by how good they really were… Every song they played was worthy of a live Album……
They really have a tight proffessional act , It’s no wonder they’ve started to do well internationally. Touring in the U.S for half the year…

Later in the evening the beautiful Fijian ladies who had flown up from Sydney came on stage to sing some island style harmonys. A perfect way to wind down the night.

Over all it was a great night, with great music, in a great venue with great atmosphere..

Surfing at Dream World, Gold Coast, Australia

Pro surfer Samantha Cornish gave me a ring recently and invited me along on a Promo shoot for her soon to be released clothing brand.
Award winning film maker Angus Muir of Firestorm Films also along as well shooting video
Of course I started the day off running late but managed to make it to Sam’s in time for a coffee and a ride up to Dream World with her.
First stop was White water World where we were to meet the crew from Get Wet Surf School with a bus load of learner surfers and another women’s pro surfer Stacey Holt, from North Stradbroke island.
After introductions, the crew hit the water and got the lesson underway.
Scotty from get Wet was running the lesson….. I don’t know how many coffees this guy has before work, but I bet they’re all triple shots!!
He definitely loves his job and his infectious enthusiasm was on show when he would hoot every one of his pupils waves!!.In fact I swear he was so excited he would hoot anything that moved.
“Yeeeeeeeew good wave Josh!!”…..
“Wooooooooo what a wave!!Wooooooooo…..
Yeeeeew!!! Did you see that seagull!!!!
Woooooooo …I need to go grocery shopping on the way home!!!!!!
Just kidding……….
The enthusiasm from Scotty and the rest of the Get Wet’s Surf School crew was incredibly infectious and before too long, those along for the lesson were hooting and laughing just as hard as they were..
Sam and Stacey fitted right in as well and couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces as they pushed some of the kids on to the waves.

The wave pool itself is a great set up but not really for the serious surfer, more for beginners and waders.
The ankle to knee high waves are perfect for the ‘first time ever surfer’ to get a feel of what a wave will feel like underneath his feet and a surfboard.
It also takes out the unpredictability factor of the ocean.
If you’re interested in having a go at surfing, but are bit worried about giving it your first go in the ocean, then these lessons are for you.
It’s perfect for building confidence before having a go on an ocean wave.
And it’s definitely a hoot!!
We said our goodbyes to the Get Wet crew and were snuck through a back gate into Dream World where we had the Flow Rider booked for an hour.
Sam and Stacey had a go and went ok, having more wipe outs than success, but both declared ‘Its way different from Surfing and more difficult than you think.’

A young lady named Renee, who worked there, gave the girls a few quick lessons and tips.
And after that she laid down some huge moves that blew everyone away. I would love to see how she goes on a wave because I can tell you she absolutely rips the bag out of that Flow Rider!!!!

After a quick bite to eat we headed down to Snapper Rocks to try and get some surfing footage. But the summer crowd was already maxed out and the waves were tiny so we went for the better option of Duranbah.
The waves were average but I stilled scored a nice sequence of Sam’s round house cutback and re-entry off the white water
Over all it was a great day and I scored hundreds of great photos.

Michael Peterson ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ sells for record price at the Burleigh Boardriders charity Auction

On Friday the 9th January, Burleigh Boardriders held their annual Charity- Auction Luncheon. That runs in conjunction with the 2009 Honolua Single Fin Classic.

The day was a great success with sports celebritys like Occy, Luke egan, Hoyo, celebrity chef , Peter Evans and rugby league legend Craig Wing.

Comedian Fred Lang was Master of ceremonies and continually brought the house down with his one liners and comeback s to the hecklers.

There were several great items up for auction including a signed Parramatta jersey and a set of canvas photo prints from Dick Hoole that MP had reportedly taken off his own lounge room wall to donate!!..

The surprise of the auction was the classic framed sepia print from Lens Legend Marty Tullemans of Michael Peterson which fetched a whopping $6000!!

The photo is an all time classic of surfing legend Michael Peterson posing with one of his finely tuned creations sitting on top of a dog house outside his old surfboard factory in Kirra.

Crazy Storm clouds over Queensland’s Gold Coast

I took these photos from my place near Jack Evans boat Harbour.

I really would have loved to have got down the beach at Rainbow Bay or Kirra or even Snapper Rocks. To get a shot of these amazing clouds rolling over the beach… But the storm was upon us so quick it was pretty amazing. I think it looks like a giant wave breaking over Coolangatta / Tweed Heads.

This is the same storm that reeked havoc all through south east Queensland last Thursday.

I swear this shot looks like a wave from underwater… not long after I took this shot we pretty much were under water!!!

Melbourne in Black and White

So what do you do in Melbourne , when youre there for the weekend , youve got the flu and you dont really feel like leaving the hotel room…..

Well… what I did, I jumped on the fee city circle tram and did a few laps of the CBD …. jumping off the tram every time I saw something I thought looked interesting enough to photograph!!

Funnily enough my thoughts of what Melbourne was like previously all were images of a rain soaked town.

But the weather on the weekend was absolutely fantastic and sunny….

I tried to put a little artistic value in to some of the pics by converting them to Black and white.

Except for the shots of Queen Victoria markets where I felt the photo’s may have lost a little if they werent in colour..
