Living on the beach

I just recently moved from the high rise Ive been living in to a classic little place opposite the beach.

One of the great things about that is when the conditions are right, I can just grab my housing and walk out the front door in my wetsuit and shoot a few … pretty cool

These are some of the little beach breaks out the front yesterday 20th June 2010.

Driftwood Timber Surf are producers of fine Surf Art and Timber surf furniture
Jason and Tina Williams started their business in the late 1990′s.
No one had successfully created a surfboard shaped coffee table that looked good and was sturdy and functional, So Jason and Tina set about creating one.
The first coffee Tables were hand painted by Tina with unique and original Surf Art . They were made with metal tubular legs. These tables had a lot of work put into them and Jason and Tina found most people were more interested in hanging the artwork on their walls rather than resting their coffee cups on them.
Since then they have evolved into a sturdy and attractive piece of furniture that any surfer would be proud to own and have in their living room.

As the business grew so did the line of products , Tina produced more examples of fine Surf Art. So it was an obvious move to start producing Surfboard shaped picture frames or wall hangings which have since become one of their most prized and consistent selling products.

After about 4 years in business they decided to invest in their own computerized over head router which gave them the ability to handle custom jobs and orders.

These days Driftwood Timber Surf has become one of the main suppliers of Surf Trophies for contests and has created unique and original looking timber designs for surf trophies for Surfing Australia, Surfing NSW and Surfing Queensland.

Bustin Down the Door or How to lose all your teeth in Hawaii

Rabbits book ‘Bustin down the Door’ has been out for over a decade now.
Its a classic story about Rabbit’s life and his journey through the birth of Pro Surfing

In his book Rabbit tells the story of his vision of professional surfing from a very young age.
The quote above is taken from a chapter called ‘Hawaii 1976-77′

The season previous (75-76) Rabbit, MR, Shaun Tomson and a few others had charged the North Shore (in particular Pipeline) like no others before them. And had returned home triumphant heroes after taming the massive waves of Hawaii.
In true Brash Aussie style Rabbit, in his article for an American surfing magazine, proclaimed the ‘changing of the guard’ in the surfing world.

This did not go down well with the Hard core Hawaiian locals and resulted in Rabbit’s beating.

Heres a few more shots from Snapper Rocks last week, the same day as the backwash photos.

Its been stormy and windy all week. But theres been a few waves to ease the pain.

Summer is only a few weeks away and I guess we’re already into cyclone season…

So hopefully the waves are going to turn on some perfection for us soon.

The Snapper Rocks backwash

I love the backwash at Snapper!!
You can get some amazing shots from the water when its not so big.
In fact the backwash can make a tiny wave look so much bigger.
I got down to the carpark at Snapper Rocks early on Thursday thinking … or knowing that there would be a few waves around after the last week of howling northerlies.
Unfortunately the rest of the Gold Coast had the same idea and the crowd was one of the worst Ive seen for a while.
Apparently Sydney and the South Coast were firing all day at about 6-8 feet.
I was actually going to swim out Froggies and get a few closeout barrel shots when I saw Shaun Gossman get a nice pit behind the rock… And then a few minutes later Parko followed suit and scored a nice one.
So when Josh Kerr turned up…….. the temptation to get a few shots of the local pros got the better of me and I jumped off the rock with my trusty water housing and fisheye lense.
The light was crap and it was soooo crowded. But I still managed to score a couple of good ones.

I love this shot above. It really shows what goes on behind the rock and you can see the wave sucking out while the guys in the barrel and the previous wave is just hitting the rocks getting ready to rebound and smash into the wave with the surfer behind it. Jarrah Tutton almost took my head off with the sequence above … I think I’ll have to start wearing my Gath helmet.
